Each of your sites is a location in TekStacks. A location's page shows its network at a glance, and rooms let you record the IT rooms and closets that hold your racks.

Overview

TekStacks calls a site a location. Locations are the same list you use for equipment and employees (see Locations). Each location has its own page with:

  • People: the employees who work there.
  • Equipment: the equipment kept there and who holds it.
  • Network: links to the location's subnets, VLANs, circuits and racks, its rooms and racks, and a diagram.

A room sits inside a location: an IT room, an MDF, a closet. Rooms are optional. A rack can belong to a room, or straight to a location with no room.

Requirements

  • Role: to see the Network section, See VLANs, subnets and addresses (every built in role by default). To add or change rooms, Add, edit and delete VLANs, subnets and addresses (Admin, Manager and Technician by default).

The Network section of a location

The section's header links to the location's subnets, VLANs, circuits and racks. Each link opens that list filtered to the location.

Below it, Rooms and racks lists each room with its number of racks, and any rack at the location with no room.

The location diagram

TekStacks draws a diagram of the location from your records each time you open the page: the circuits with an end at the location (disconnected ones are left out), the equipment kept there whose type is a firewall, router, switch, wireless access point, server, storage, UPS, console server or network device, and the connections between them. Nothing needs drawing by hand.

To reuse the diagram in a documentation page, click Copy as Mermaid and paste it into a mermaid block (see Markdown and diagrams).

Add a room

  1. Open the location's page.
  2. In the Network section, under Rooms and racks, click Add room.
  3. Enter a Name, such as IT room, MDF or Closet 2. Floor and Notes are optional; notes are a good place for where the key is or the door code.
  4. Save. The room's page opens.

You can also create a room while editing a piece of equipment: choose its Location, then type a new name in Room.

The room page

A room's page shows:

  • Racks: every rack in the room drawn side by side. Click a rack's name to open it.
  • Power: the room's power circuits and what each one feeds (see Power).
  • Equipment in this room: equipment whose Room is set to this room on its page.
  • Network circuits at the location: circuits with an end at the room's location.

From the room page you can click Add rack to add a rack already set to this room (see Racks), Edit the room, or Delete it.

Notes

Note: Deleting a room keeps its racks. They stay at the same location, without a room.

Note: If you manage clients, each client has its own locations and rooms. The pages show the client you are working in (see The client switcher).

Troubleshooting

The location page has no Network section. Your role cannot see network records. Ask an Admin.

The diagram says "Nothing to draw yet." No circuit has an end at this location, and no equipment of a network type (such as Switch, Firewall or Router) is kept there. Set the location on that equipment, check its Type, or add a circuit with an end at this location.

The Room field is grayed out on the equipment form. Choose a Location first. Rooms belong to a location.
