Appearance
Record the power circuits in each room and what each device is fed from, and TekStacks shows how power reaches every device and how much of each rack's budget is used.
Overview
Power is recorded in three places:
- Power circuits belong to a room: a breaker in a panel, with its voltage and amps.
- Power feeds belong to a piece of equipment: what it is plugged into, a circuit or a UPS or PDU, on which outlet and which side.
- Power on a piece of equipment: what it draws, and for a UPS or PDU what it can supply.
From these, the room page shows each circuit with everything fed from it, through each UPS and PDU, and each rack page shows its power budget. All of it is optional.
Requirements
- Role: to see power, See VLANs, subnets and addresses (every built in role by default). To record it, Add, edit and delete VLANs, subnets and addresses (Admin, Manager and Technician by default).
Step 1: Add the room's power circuits
- Open the room (see Locations and rooms).
- In the Power section, click Add power circuit.
- Enter a Name, such as Circuit 14, and any of Panel, Breaker, Receptacle (such as L5-30), Voltage, Amps and Note.
- Save.
With voltage and amps recorded, TekStacks works out the circuit's safe continuous load: 80 percent of volts times amps, the way electricians size a circuit.
Step 2: Record what each device draws
- Open the equipment's page and, in its Network section, click Power.
- Enter Draws in watts. For equipment of the UPS or PDU type, also enter Can supply in watts.
- Save.
Equipment with no draw entered counts the typical draw from its device library entry, when there is one, and the rack says how many figures are estimates.
Step 3: Record what feeds each device
- On the equipment's page, in its Network section, click Add power feed.
- Choose Fed from: a UPS or PDU (equipment of those types), or one of your power circuits.
- Optionally enter the Outlet, and the Side (A or B) for equipment with two power supplies.
- Save. Add a second feed for the other supply.
A UPS or PDU's page lists what it Powers.
The rack power budget
Each rack's Power section shows what the equipment in it draws against the circuits that feed it, as a bar:
- With feeds on both side A and side B, either side has to carry the whole rack, so the budget is the smaller side.
- Past 80 percent of the circuits' safe load, the rack says so in red.
On the room page, each circuit and device shows its load against its capacity, in amber when it is close and red when it is over.
Notes
Note: Deleting a power circuit removes the feeds from it. The equipment stays.
Troubleshooting
The rack says "No circuit feeds a PDU or UPS in this rack yet." Add a power feed from a circuit on the PDU's or UPS's page, in its Network section.
The rack budget shows a draw but no percentage. A circuit feeding the rack has no Voltage or Amps recorded. Edit the circuit on its room's page.
A UPS or PDU is missing from Fed from. Its Type must be UPS or PDU. Change it on the equipment form.
