Appearance
Document a rack while you stand in front of it: your phone steps down the rack one U at a time, and you scan what is there to put it in place.
Overview
The walkthrough starts at the top of the front and moves down one place at a time: each empty U, or the top of anything that fills several. At each place it shows what is already recorded, or offers to scan what you see. When you reach the bottom of the front, you can walk the rear.
You can scan an asset tag, a serial number or a TekStacks QR label with your phone's camera. Nothing needs installing.
Requirements
- Role: anyone who can see racks can step through one. Scanning and placing equipment need Add, edit and delete VLANs, subnets and addresses (Admin, Manager and Technician by default).
Steps
- Open the rack's page and click Walk through.
- The page shows the current U (for example U42) and how far down you are. If something is recorded there, check it matches what you see and click Next.
- At an empty U, click Scan what is here and point the camera at the tag, serial or QR label. Or type it in Or type a tag or serial and click Find.
- If it matches one piece of equipment, it is placed at this U and the walkthrough moves on.
- If it is recorded somewhere else (another rack, another U, or a shelf), TekStacks says where and offers Move it here.
- If nothing matches, click Add it as new equipment here to open the equipment form with the tag filled in. When you save, the equipment is placed at this U and you return to the walkthrough.
- To add something without scanning, click Add new equipment at this U.
- Click Skip to leave a U empty, or Up to go back.
- At the bottom, click walk the rear to do the back of the rack, or See the rack to open the drawing. The Front, switch to rear button changes faces at any time.
To photograph the rack on the way, click Take a rack photo. It is added to the rack's Photos.
Notes
Note: The walkthrough points at the top U of what is in front of you. Equipment several U tall is placed so its top lands at that U, using the Rack height recorded on the equipment.
Note: A QR label only matches equipment of the same client as the rack.
Troubleshooting
"The scanner has not loaded. Close this tab and open the site again." The camera scanner did not start. Reload the page, and allow camera access when your browser asks.
A scan says nothing matches, but the equipment exists. The tag or serial matched more than one piece of equipment, or none in this client. Type the asset tag instead, or open the equipment and place it from its Network section.
I do not see Scan what is here. Your role can see racks but not change them.
