Types are the kinds of equipment you track, and makes are the companies that build it. TekStacks comes with both built in, and you add your own for anything else.

Overview

Types bring their own fields. A laptop has an operating system, CPU and RAM; a phone has an IMEI and carrier; a server has a management URL for its iDRAC or iLO; a camera has its form factor, power and lenses. The built in types are Laptop, Desktop, Workstation, Server, Phone, Tablet, Monitor, Dock, Printer, Network device, Switch, Router, Firewall, Wireless access point, Storage, UPS, PDU, Patch panel, Console server, Camera and Other. Types you add have no fields of their own; use custom fields for them.

Makes know their own identifiers. Dell's serial is its service tag, and TekStacks works out the express service code from it. Lenovo adds a machine type and model number, and HP a product number.

Each list shows whether an entry is Built in or Yours, how much Equipment uses it, and its State.

Requirements

  • Role: Manage statuses, locations, departments, vendors and custom fields. By default Admin, Manager and Technician have it.

Steps

Add a type or make

  1. Open Configure, then Types or Makes.
  2. Click Add type or Add make.
  3. Type the name and save.

You can also add one from the drop down on the equipment form.

Hide or archive one

  1. Open Configure, then Types or Makes.
  2. On the row, click Hide (built in) or Archive (yours).
  3. Confirm.

It stops being offered when adding equipment. Equipment already using it keeps it. Hiding a built in entry hides it for your company only. Click Restore to bring it back.

Merge a duplicate

  1. On a type or make of yours, click Merge into another.
  2. Choose the one to keep under Merge into.
  3. Save.

Everything using the first one moves to the second, then the first is removed. Merging a type also moves its custom fields and its lifetime. The activity log keeps a record.

Rename one of yours

Click the edit icon on the row, change the name and save. Built in entries cannot be renamed.

Notes

Note: Types and makes are shared by all your clients if you manage clients.

Note: Set how long each type lasts under Settings, Lifecycle. End of life is the purchase date plus that many years.

Troubleshooting

"There is already one with that name. Merge into it instead." A type or make with that name exists. Use Merge into another on the duplicate.

FAQ

Can I delete a type? No. Archive it, or merge it into another to remove it.
