Custom fields record details on equipment that TekStacks has no field for, such as a cost center, a lease end date or a BitLocker key ID.

Overview

A custom field can apply to every type of equipment or to one type, and can be required. It shows on the equipment form under Custom fields, on the equipment page under Details, and as a column you can turn on in the Equipment list.

Each field holds one Kind of value:

  • Text
  • Long text
  • Number
  • Date
  • Yes or no
  • Choice from a list

Requirements

  • Role: Manage statuses, locations, departments, vendors and custom fields. By default Admin, Manager and Technician have it.

Steps

  1. Open Configure, then Custom fields.
  2. Click New field.
  3. Fill in:
    • Label: the field's name.
    • Help text: shown under the field on the equipment form, such as where to find the value.
    • Kind of value.
    • Choices, for Choice from a list.
    • Applies to: one type, or leave it on Every type.
    • Required.
  4. Save.

To change a field, click the edit icon on its row. To stop using it, click the archive icon and confirm.

Notes

Note: The kind of value is fixed once a field is created, so values already stored keep their meaning.

Note: Archiving a field takes it off the form. Values already entered are kept and still shown on the equipment page, marked (archived). Click Restore to bring it back.

Note: A Yes or no field is never required, since off is an answer.

FAQ

Can a custom field appear on the label? Not today. Labels show the fields their template includes. See Label templates.

I need a field for a built in value, such as hostname. Check the built in fields first. Name or hostname, Condition and others may be hidden under Settings, Equipment fields.
