Appearance
Keep scripts, configs and exports beside your documentation, and write snippets you can share like a GitHub gist. Every save keeps the earlier version.
Overview
Files holds two kinds of item:
- Uploads: any file you upload, such as a switch config export or a PDF. Text files up to 1 MB can be edited in the browser.
- Snippets: text written in TekStacks, with one or more files in each, highlighted for their language, such as a PowerShell script and the CSV it reads.
The top of the list shows how much of your plan's storage is used. With clients turned on, each client has its own files.
Requirements
- Role: See and download files to view them (every built in role by default). Upload, edit, share and delete files to change them (Admin, Manager and Technician by default).
Steps
Upload a file
- In the sidebar, open Documentation, then Files.
- Click Upload.
- Drop a file into the box, or click it to choose one.
- Optionally enter a Name and a Description.
- Click Upload. A progress bar shows while large files are sent.
Write a snippet
- In Files, click New snippet.
- Enter a Snippet name and optionally a Description.
- Under Files in this snippet, give the first file a File name. The Language is picked from the file extension, such as PowerShell for
.ps1; change it if needed. - Write or paste the content.
- Click Add another file for more files in the same snippet. Drag them to reorder.
- Click Save.
Change a file
Open the file or snippet, then:
- Edit: change a snippet, or a text upload, in the browser. Saving keeps a new version.
- Upload a new version: replace an upload with a new file. The old one stays under Versions.
- Download: download the current version. Each row under Versions has its own Download.
- Restore: on an older version, makes it current again. The current one stays in the list.
Archive or delete
- Archive takes the file out of the list without removing anything. Find it with the Show filter set to Archived, open it and click Unarchive.
- Delete removes the content of every version for good and turns off any share link. The record, its list of versions and its activity stay, under the Show filter's Deleted.
Notes
Note: Uploads, snippets, documentation attachments and old versions in TekStacks storage all count toward your plan's storage. The Billing page shows your plan's storage and largest file. Files in your own storage do not count, and the largest file limit does not apply to them.
Note: On the MSP plan, uploaded files go to your own storage. Until it is connected, Files says so and offers Connect your storage. Snippets work without it.
Note: With clients turned on and All clients chosen in the switcher, Upload and New snippet are hidden. Pick a client first.
Note: A change record can link a file as its Before or After config. See Change management.
Troubleshooting
"Your plan takes files up to" a number of MB. The file is larger than your plan allows in TekStacks storage. Upload a smaller file, choose a larger plan on the Billing page, or connect your own storage.
"Your plan includes" a number of GB "of storage, and this would pass it." Remove old files or versions, choose a larger plan on the Billing page, or connect your own storage.
"Uploaded files go to your own storage on your plan." Ask an Admin to connect a bucket under Administration, Storage, then upload again.
There is no Edit button on an upload. Only text files up to 1 MB can be edited in the browser. Download the file, change it, and use Upload a new version.
FAQ
Can I share a file with someone outside the company? Yes, with a share link. See Share links.
Can I get a deleted file back? No. Delete removes the content of every version. Use Archive if you only want it out of the way.
